June 1, 2014 Students have successfully written to realistic fiction series. They enjoyed making up characters and giving them realistic problems to solve. We will finish up the year with writing assessments in each of the genres we have studied this year. Narrative, Opinion, and Informational.

We have begun the final unit of study. During this unit of study, students will be developing characters and writing realistic fiction series books. So far, they are having fun inventing their characters and writing about the troubles they get into.

We have finished up opinion writing by writing book reviews. Students shared their book reviews both on news and views and with Mrs. Mears’ first grade class. We will do a short narrative unit of study before spring break. We will be studying the writing crafts of author, Kevin Henkes. After spring break, students will be writing realistic fiction.

We finished up the first bend of opinion writing with a small writer’s celebration. We will begin the next unit on Thursday. Students will be writing reviews of movies, restaurants, games, etc… They will be using many writing strategies to convince other readers of their opinions.

We had a fantastic Author’s Celebration before break! Students were able to share their chapter books with classmates and other visiting students and staff! We will begin our next writing unit this week. This unit will focus on opinion writing.

Students have been busy writing informational chapter books. This week we will be busy working on publishing these books. We will be having an author’s celebration on Thursday.

Students have been busy editing and publishing a narrative story. They added a title page and an author’s blurb to a small moment story they chose from their files. After we added details and edited the stories, we shared them with classmates. Students were thrilled to share their stories!
Next week we will begin working on writing informational text.

Students have been busy writing small moments, also known as personal narratives. Students have recently begun working with a writing partner. Everyday, we begin our writer’s workshop with a mini lesson before students begin writing. We have learned how to touch and tell, sketch then write. This past week, we have focused on bringing “life” to our stories by adding conversation, details, and feelings to our stories.

I am so excited to begin writer’s workshop this week! Yesterday, we had our first mini-lesson and began to write small moment stories. I am amazed at the writing abilities in this classroom!

This week we will begin our final unit of study. Children will be listening to and writing poetry for the remainder of the school year. We will finish the year by publishing a poetry book.

We are busy writing our All About books. Students have come up with some very interesting topics. We will publish our first book when we complete the rough draft.

This week we will be learning how to write “All About” books. We will begin by brainstorming ideas about things we know a lot about. We will then begin writing a book which will include a table of contents.

We are busy working on Unit 4 during Writers Workshop. This unit focuses on editing our writing. We have been using royal red revising pens to check our writings for errors. We have learned about writing beginnings to “hook” the reader. We have also been practicing how to show our feelings in our writing instead of telling our feelings.

We finished up Unit 3 with an Author’s chair on Wednesday. We will begin unit 4 today. Unit 4 focuses on editing and how to fix up our stories to make them more appealing to readers.

This week we will write a thank-you card to Miss Ruth. Miss Ruth sponsors the Kind News publication which we receive monthly. We will continue to work on writing small moments, focusing on using spaces, spelling words in a snap, and writing the sounds we hear in longer words. We are really working on making our writing readable.

This week we will be making cards for members of our military. We will begin our next unit of study on Wednesday. We will be looking more closely at the conventions of writing. Using correct capitalization, punctuation and spacing.

This week we continue to add to our writing. We learned how to focus in on one event like a photographer zooms in on one subject. We also leaned how to help the reader better understand how the author feels by writing feeling statements. We will finish the week by working on endings to our stories.

This week we have focused on stretching small moments into stories. We practiced writing words by stretching them out and listening to the sounds we here. We also practiced sketching our pictures instead of drawing them.
Our focus trait this week is word choice. Students are busy using adjectives in their writing to spice it up!

Last Friday, students shared their writing with student’s from Mrs. Mears class. They were excited to be able to read their selection and listen to comments from their classmates.
This week we were busy writing thank you notes to all of the people who helped with the new playground. We also began our second unit of study. This unit focuses on expanding our writing by paying close attention to word choice. Students will be listening to stories which contain this element of writing. They will be learning how to take a small moment and turn it into a story.
